Wests lift inaugural Charity Shield

17th February 2014

West Hull lifted the inaugural NCL Charity Shield thanks to a hard fought 24-16 win over Leigh Miners Rangers.

The NCL Champions battled to an 8-6 half-time lead and eventually made the game safe with two second half touchdowns from full-back Matty Plummer proving vital.

Wingers Luke Foster and Josh Hart had both crossed for Wests inside the opening quarter, however, Miners hit back in the closing stages of the first half as Scott O’Brien improved a Keiron Eccleston effort.

The Challenge Trophy winners started the second period strongly with Adam Thomason and O’Brien – who also added another conversion – both grabbing four-pointers, although Plummer’s first try in between times kept the Hull side in the contest.

The full-backs second effort in the 65th minute was improved by Josh Hart and meant the champions were back in front and they made the game safe when centre Tom Radley raced over with 12 minutes left.
